Co-founded in 1986 by Dr. James Andrews, the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center has a long and rich history of treating complex orthopaedic injuries in all types of individuals and high-level athletes. Dr. Andrews moved to Birmingham from Columbus Georgia, where he previously trained and worked with Dr. Jack Hughston, one of the pioneers and godfathers of orthopaedic sports medicine. In his own right, Dr. Andrews has become the most well-known orthopaedic surgeon in the country due to his ability to provide excellent care and surgical expertise, which has allowed some of the biggest names in sport to return to the game and profession they love. As part of his move to Birmingham, Dr. Andrews helped establish the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), a non-profit research department affiliated with ASMOC, which serves to educate the next generation of sports medicine surgeons and non-operative specialists and to produce meaningful, insightful, and impactful orthopaedic biomechanical, basic science and clinical research. Six surgical fellows matriculate each year to be trained by some of the best surgeons in the country, including Drs. Lyle Cain, Jeff Dugas and Benton Emblom. Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center has become one of the leading orthopaedic practices in the country due to its ability to provide the highest quality care. This is in large part due to its high-volume nature and unrivalled exposure to sports medicine team coverage. The efficiency of the practice is second to none, which allows us to provide the safest and highest quality care to the most amount of people. At ASMOC, we perform more ACL reconstructions, rotator cuff repairs, shoulder labral repairs, UCL reconstructions (Tommy John Surgeries) and repairs (created and pioneered by Dr. Jeff Dugas), and hip arthroscopy surgeries than most other places in the country. With volume comes expertise. Additionally, ASMOC is the official medical provider for the following: the University of Alabama football and athletics, Auburn University football and athletics, Troy University Football and athletics, Samford University football and athletics, the University of West Alabama, Tuskegee University, Jacksonville State University, Birmingham Southern College, Miles College, Shelton State as well as Birmingham’s professional baseball team, the Birmingham Barons, Alabama Soccer and most high schools in the greater Birmingham area.
