Co-founded in 1986 by Dr. James Andrews, the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center has a long and rich history of treating complex orthopaedic injuries in all types of individuals and high-level athletes. Dr. Andrews moved to Birmingham from Columbus Georgia, where he previously trained and worked with Dr. Jack Hughston, one of the pioneers and godfathers of orthopaedic sports medicine. In his own right, Dr. Andrews has become the most well-known orthopaedic surgeon in the country due to his ability to provide excellent care and surgical expertise, which has allowed some of the biggest names in sport to return to the game and profession they love. As part of his move to Birmingham, Dr. Andrews helped establish the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), a non-profit research department affiliated with ASMOC, which serves to educate the next generation of sports medicine surgeons and non-operative specialists and to produce meaningful, insightful, and impactful orthopaedic biomechanical, basic science and clinical research. Six surgical fellows matriculate each year to be trained by some of the best surgeons in the country, including Drs. Lyle Cain, Jeff Dugas and Benton Emblom.
